House District 139 Internship
The Office of State Representative Charlene Ward Johnson is seeking an intern for House District 139, covering parts of historic Acres Homes and North Houston. This program is intended to expand opportunities for individuals from all backgrounds who have an interest in pursuing a career in political science, public administration, or business administration.
This is an unpaid position and you will serve in a variety of ways which will consist of collaborating with staff. We are seeking initiative-taking individuals with great organizational and people skills. You will be assigned tasks that range from policy issues to constituent casework where you will have a real impact on the communities in House District 139.
ELIGIBILITY
The ideal candidate will have a basic understanding or interest of the Legislative process and of House District 139. They will have excellent written and verbal skills and must be willing to learn. Those who are interested in a career in government are strongly urged to apply. Prior Legislative experience is not required. This is a part-time opportunity that will require you to work out of our District Office located at the Houston Community College Acres Homes Campus.
INTERNSHIP ASSIGNMENTS
- Answer incoming phone calls and disseminate information as needed to staff;
- Become well versed in the member’s legislative priorities and viewpoints on various subjects as it relates to District 139 or the State of Texas;
- Assist with additional administrative needs as they arise (scanning, printing, etc.);
- Provide office and clerical support: greet visitors, answer phones, process resolutions, certificate requests, etc.
- Monitor, track mail, and respond in a timely manner;
- Other duties as assigned by the Member and Chief of Staff.
