SUMMARY:
The District Director is chiefly responsible for ensuring presence in the community and updating the Representative and Staff on district and local issues. This position acts as a liaison to state, district, and local agencies for the Representative and constituents, answers casework correspondence as well as verbal and written communications with constituents, and manages scheduling under the direction of the Chief of Staff.

Ideal applicants have previous legislative or social work experience and/or a postsecondary degree in relevant fields. Solid written and verbal communication skills, organization, attention to detail, the ability to work as part of a team and under pressure, and a strong work ethic are required. Experience managing staff or volunteers or similar demonstrated leadership preferred. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Maintaining a presence in the district and developing and executing a district outreach plan;
- Handling constituent casework and monitoring casework for problems requiring legislative action;
- Continually screening active cases and acting as liaison with constituents to ensure timely response and assistance;
- Logging and responding to constituent inquiries and communications;
- Maintaining up-to-date files on all cases and categories of information of importance to the office;
- Maintaining the Representative’s calendar and assisting with scheduling for Staff as directed;
- Staffing the Representative in certain hearings and all matters related to assigned legislative matters;
- Drafting legislation, assembling bill books, research and memos, bill analysis, vote recommendations, preparing for hearings or committee meetings, floor packets, and collaborating on legislative strategy for assigned matters;
- Assisting with communications, including social media, press releases, newsletters, letters, and remarks;
- Training and supervising staff, including full-time legislative aides and part-time interns with respect to logging incoming and outgoing correspondence, handling visitors, telephone calls, and computer operations;
- Conducting regular outreach, meetings, and attend briefings with stakeholders, staff, and constituents;
- Maintaining a good working relationship with the Representative, Staff, and constituents;
- Performing other duties as assigned.
PREFERRED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Willingness and competency to perform the essential job functions above;
- Strong oral and written communication skills;
- Thoroughness and careful attention to detail;
- Temperament to communicate with a variety of personalities in a professional and cooperatively and courteously with others;
- Thorough knowledge of issues and events in the district, county, and region;
- Knowledge of local, state, and federal agencies and departments;
- Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment in fulfillment of responsibilities;
- Ability to work well under pressure and handle stress;
- Flexibility to work long hours during the legislative session, including some nights and weekends;
- Knowledge of office policies, practices, and procedures;
- Experience with LDR, TLIS, CMS, and other legislative software; and
- Proficiency in office computer applications and word processing.
