LEGISLATIVE DIRECTOR
The Capitol Office of State Representative Terry Canales (D-Edinburg) is seeking a full-time Legislative Director for the 89th Texas Legislative Session starting this fall and running through July 1, 2025. This position carries a salary commensurate with experience. Representative Terry Canales (D-Edinburg) currently serves as Chairman of the House Transportation Committee, a member of the House Committee on Homeland Security & Public Safety, a member of the House Select Committee on Community Safety, and an appointed member of the Texas Sunset Commission.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Legislative Director works under the supervision of the Capitol Director. The position entails drafting and researching legislation, tracking legislation throughout the process, organizing committee materials, Initiating/handling meetings with major stakeholders on various issues, and managing day-to-day legislative work. Serve as the primary office contact for assigned committees and policy areas. Both the Legislative Director and Capitol Director will supervise and coordinate the activities of other office staff and interns.
WORKING CONDITIONS
The Legislature is a fast-paced environment where you must be able to work nontraditional hours, including evenings and weekends. Employees working directly for legislators must be able to perform duties in a typical office setting with minimal supervision.
DESIRED ATTRIBUTES
This position requires excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as basic research and editorial skills. A successful applicant should have excellent computer and verbal communication skills to work effectively with legislative staff. The candidate should also have a well-informed understanding of the legislative process, be able to handle being in a high-stress environment, and complete work under tight deadlines. Excellent organizational and time management skills are a must. A working knowledge of basic Windows operating systems, specifically Microsoft Outlook, Word, Internet, Excel, PowerPoint, etc., is required.
