SUMMARY:  Produce impartial analyses of pending legislation for the Daily Floor Report produced for House members during legislative sessions. Research and write in-depth reports on state policy issues during the interim, with a focus on criminal justice policy.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

•  Research, analyze, and write about pending legislation for the Daily Floor Report during the legislative session.
•  Write in-depth reports and short blog articles on complex state policy issues and legislative processes.
•  Follow assigned policy areas and committees, with a focus on criminal justice and related policy areas.
•  Communicate with relevant stakeholders, including legislative staff, state agencies, and advocacy groups. 
•  Help coordinate staff assignments within certain policy areas and publications as needed.
•  Work closely with editors to refine and publish quality bill analyses, articles, and reports.
•  Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Individuals with backgrounds or degrees in writing, law, public policy, journalism, government, and related fields are encouraged to apply. Candidates with direct experience in criminal justice policy or other related policy areas strongly preferred. Other areas may include juvenile justice, corrections, public safety, civil jurisprudence, or judiciary.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Advanced skills in writing for a general audience and in critical analysis. Experience or demonstrable interest in state issues and the legislative process. Ability to assemble and synthesize information rapidly under deadline pressure, meticulous attention to detail, and a commitment to factual accuracy, objectivity, and impartial analysis. Must be highly organized, flexible, and proactive. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work with a variety of stakeholders in the legislative process. Must be prepared during legislative sessions to work considerable extended hours and some weekends, as needed, and must be able to work in a fast-paced and rapidly changing environment. Must be able to work independently on long-term projects. Must be able to work in the office. This is not a remote position. Must adhere to department dress code and demonstrate the ability to follow all policies and procedures as set forth in the House of Representatives Personnel Manual of Policies & Procedures.
