Chief of Staff
The Office of State Representative Venton Jones seeks an experienced and motivated individual to serve as Chief of Staff. The Chief of Staff will work closely with the Member, acts as chief policy advisor and manages all aspects of the Member's offices. This position will be responsible for the development and management of all legislative policy objectives, strategies and operating plans for the Member's Capitol and Dallas District office. Pay will be commensurate with experience.
Required Skills and Background
- The Chief of Staff will be based in Dallas, Texas with travel to Austin, Texas, as needed for legislative duties.
- Exceptionally well-organized with an established history of project, staff, and organizational skills required to meet strict, overlapping deadlines.
- 3-5 years of senior Texas state legislative experience
- Proven experience leading state legislative policy: including research, drafting, negotiations, coordination, committee and floor activities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Sample submission of policy paper and/or project management plan required.
- Disciplined approach to the completion of tasks.
- Ability and willingness to work long hours and weekends, as needed.
- Ability to function productivity under pressure.
Responsibilities
- Work with the Member and staff to develop and implement documented office protocol and strategies to advance short-term and long-term legislative, policy, and district priorities.
- Proven ability to effectively manage and collaborate with individuals at all levels within a legislative office, including the Member ("managing up"), direct reports ("managing down"), and colleagues/external stakeholders ("managing across").
- Directly supervise all employees in the district and capitol office: including recruiting, hiring, training, managing, assigning and directing work, and ensuring effective internal communication;
- Have a strong capability to manage external communications, including correspondence, invitations, digital and print media, policy position papers, State of Texas and federal officials, leadership, and staff.
- Manage outreach and prompt responsiveness to Member request, constituent services, including developing and managing calls and request tracker.
- Facilitate effective collaborations and coalition building with the offices of city, state, and federal officials and the leadership and staff of the legislature.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with HD 100 constituents, community leaders, advocacy organizations, and other stakeholders.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Member.
