Digital Communications Specialist

Overview: The Office of Speaker Dade Phelan is seeking a highly motivated, creative individual to manage digital communications in the Office of the Speaker. The digital communications specialist will work with the communications team to manage the Speaker’s online communications and provide digital media support to Texas House members. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in online content creation (copywriting and graphic design), with the ability to effectively communicate and amplify the Speaker’s and House members’ legislative messages across platforms.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  •  Create engaging, daily content (including copy and graphic design) for online use;
  • Provide digital communications support to all Texas House members, including the regular creation and distribution of graphics and digital toolkits;
  • Work closely with the communications team to plan and execute digital messaging efforts for key legislative initiatives, press pushes and events; 
  • Coordinate with House members’ staff to understand their digital needs and provide tailored support. Assist in training and advising staff on best practices for digital communication;
  • Monitor online trends and posts and make recommendations for content based on topical items;
  • Assist the communications office with identifying opportunities to share content and grow audiences online.

 

Job Skills & Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an eye for detail and a creative mindset
  • Proficiency in graphic design (e.g. Canva, Adobe Creative Suite)
  • Strong understanding of media platforms, trends and analytics tools
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines – especially during the legislative session (January-May 2025)
  • Experience working in government or political communications is a plus

 

Additional Information:

This position is based in Austin, Texas at the State Capitol. The digital communications specialist will report to the communications director and work closely with other members of the Speaker’s team. This position offers a unique opportunity to work closely with the Speaker of the House and elected members of the Texas House of Representatives, in addition to cultivating knowledge and experience of the Texas legislative process. The salary and title for this position will be commensurate on experience and qualifications.
