JOURNAL PRODUCTION EDITOR (EDITOR III)

SUMMARY:  An in-person, full-time position with the Texas House Journal, the official record of formal house proceedings. Performs responsible legislative and administrative support and technical assistance in the house journal clerk’s office. Work is performed under the supervision of the journal clerk with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment.


ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: 

  • Reviewing manuscript and notes of floor proceedings, researching and resolving discrepancies
  • Editing the manuscript for format and style, and distributing to journal typists
  • Responsible for ensuring the accuracy of the manuscript
  • Assists in training and supervising journal staff involved in typing and proofreading the house journal
  • Performs related projects and duties as assigned


EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in English, journalism, government, communications, or a related area of study. Must have professional experience in general office practices and procedures. Legislative experience is preferred, but not required.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:  Working knowledge of journal office practices and administrative procedures preferred. Ability to understand and interpret house policies and procedures. Ability to understand the legislative process and its impact on journal content and format. Thorough knowledge of English, vocabulary, grammar, and spelling. Skill in the use of electronic data processing equipment and software. Ability to learn special formatting requirements and procedures used in applications for house journal production. Ability to interact on a professional level and work effectively with legislators, legislative staff, and the public. Position is full-time, in-person with state employee benefits and requires the ability to work flexible and considerable extended hours, including weekends, when the legislature is in session. Must adhere to department dress code and demonstrate the ability to follow all policies and procedures as set forth in the Personnel Manual of Policies and Procedures. Must be physically present in the office to perform assigned duties.

GENERAL SALARY INFORMATION:

SALARY RANGE: State Salary Group B22. Salary will be determined by experience and qualifications.
