JOURNAL PRODUCTION ASSISTANT

(Session only--three positions)

SUMMARY: 

Performs moderately complex data processing work. Supports the Journal Clerk's office of the Texas House of Representatives in the production of the House Journal, the official record of the formal house proceedings. All work performed under the direct supervision of the House Journal Clerk Department manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Documents proceedings and actions, including votes, taken by the house on all measures, motions, and questions of order during house sessions on the chamber floor.
  • Produces daily manuscripts using proprietary software applications.
  • Transcribes floor debate from audio/video recordings.
  • Performs related projects and duties as assigned.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: 

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in English, journalism, or a related area of study. Should have experience in general office practices and procedures. Some legislative experience is preferred, but not required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: 

Ability to become familiar with specialized formats used in producing the journal. Skill in reading and interpreting editing and proofreading markup. Thorough knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. Must demonstrate an attention to detail and accuracy within defined formats. Ability to interpret and follow instructions. Ability to work extended hours and under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to adapt to the changing workload and demands of a legislative schedule. Position is full-time with state employee benefits and requires the ability to work flexible and considerable extended hours, including weekends. Must adhere to department dress code and demonstrate the ability to follow all policies and procedures as set forth in the House Personnel Manual of Policies and Procedures.

Job commitment until the end of the Regular Session.

SALARY RANGE: $3,250 per month
