The Office of State Representative Rhetta Andrews Bowers is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented, full-time Chief of Staff. This individual will work closely with the Member and act as chief policy advisor. This position develops and implements all policy objectives, strategies, and operating plans for the Member's offices and directs all activities and staff of the Member's Austin and district offices.
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Previous Texas legislative experience;
- Thorough knowledge of the Texas state legislative process;
- Strong leadership and organizational skills;
- Ability to accept performance-based feedback and direction;
- Proven experience in directing legislative policy, including researching, drafting, tracking and negotiation;
- Exceptionally well organized with the ability to meet strict deadlines;
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and knowledge of office computer applications;
- Ability to work well under pressure and adhere to strict deadlines;
- Disciplined and solutions-oriented approach to all tasks;
- Ability to work long hours and weekends; and

JOB DUTIES
- Assist the Member in developing, planning and executing the Member's legislative agenda and initiatives;
- Provide regular updates to the Member on the status of legislation and legislative matters;
- Ability to handle the Member's calendar as well as schedule meetings;
- Directly supervise all employees in the district and legislative office: including recruiting, hiring, training, managing, assigning and directing work, and ensuring effective internal communication;
- Manage external communications including: development of talking points, position statements, press releases, social media posts, monitoring of and response to media inquiries, etc.;
- Ability to organize special events and projects;
- Facilitate effective collaboration/ coalition building with the offices of city, state, and federal officials and the leadership and staff of the legislature;
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with constituents and community leaders, advocacy organizations, and other stakeholders;
- Oversee the office budget and conduct regular staff meetings;
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Member.
This is a full-time position in Austin, Texas and requires a full-time commitment starting in November. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
