The Office of State Representative Trey Martinez Fischer seeks a motivated individual to serve as Chief of Staff. The Chief of Staff works closely with the Member, acts as chief policy advisor and manages all aspects of the Member's offices. This position develops and implements all legislative policy objectives, strategies and operating plans for the Member's Capitol office and directs all activities and staff of the Member's State Capitol and San Antonio District office. Pay will be commensurate with experience.
Required Skills and Background:
- Proven record of strong leadership and project management organizational skills to meet strict, overlapping deadlines;
- Thorough knowledge of the Texas state legislative process;
- 3-5 years Texas legislative experience;
- Proven experience directing state legislative policy: including research, drafting, negotiations, coordination, committee and floor activities;
- Exceptionally well-organized with the ability to meet strict deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal skills; sample submission of policy paper required;
- Disciplined approach to all tasks;
- Ability and willingness to work long hours and weekends, as needed; and
- Ability to function productively under pressure.
Responsibilities:
- Work with the Member and staff to develop and implement office protocol and strategies to advance daily smooth office operations, legislative policy and district priorities;
- Manage outreach and responsiveness to constituent services including developing and executing a call and service request tracker;
- Directly supervise ALL staff in Member's Capitol and District offices, including recruiting, hiring, training, managing, assigning and directing tasks to ensure smooth team operations and effective communications;
- Have a strong capability in managing external communications, including correspondence, invitations, policy position papers, op-eds, special event talking points and speeches, social media strategy, media inquiries, etc.;
- Develop protocol to ensure effective and productive collaboration with offices of City of San Antonio, Bexar County, State of Texas and federal officials, in addition to members of the Texas Legislature, leadership and staff;
- Oversee Member's operating budget; and
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Member.
