Rep. Mary González Co-Authors Transformative School Finance Reform Bill
AUSTIN - Today, the Texas House passed HB 3, a comprehensive school finance plan that will transform our public education system in Texas, and is the first meaningful school finance reform since deeps cuts were made in 2011. H.B. 3 increases our state’s investment into public schools by $9 billion, including raising the basic allotment at a historic rate, investing in full-day Pre-K, and providing more funding for students with disabilities.
"I have been fighting to improve school finance since I joined the Legislature in 2013, and I am proud to co-author this monumental legislation to ensure our schools are fully funded," said Rep. Mary González. ”I thank Chairman Huberty, the Public Education Committee members, and the rest of the House for coming together to support this tremendous addition to our school finance system.
In addition, Rep. González authored two amendments that increase funding for special education by approximately $85 million, the first increase to a special education allotment since 1995.
All students deserve an equal opportunity to receive the best education our state can give. Through this legislation, the State Legislature is taking an important step for all students across Texas.
