Representative Gene Wu nominates John Harris for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship
HOUSTON, Texas - Representative Gene Wu announced today the nomination of John Harris for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship. Harris, a freshman at Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, plans on pursuing a degree in environmental geoscience.
The Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program (TASSP) was created by the Texas Legislature to provide financial opportunities for students seeking a college education and also wanting to pursue a military career by participating in Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) programs at college. Students who receive the scholarship make a commitment to serve as a member of the Texas Army National Guard, Texas Air National Guard, Texas State Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Merchant Marine or a commissioned officer in any branch of the armed services of the United States. TASSP awards make a huge difference in the lives of high achieving students by providing a $40,000 scholarship with awards of up to $10,000 per academic year for up to four years toward undergraduate education at any Texas University with an ROTC program.
Harris has distinguished himself through high academic achievement, extracurricular activities, and community service throughout all of his high school years. Harris was a member of the National Honor Society, a member of Boy Scouts of America where he achieved the Eagle Scout rank, participated in ROTC, and attained a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do. In addition, Harris has been active in his church where he served as the President of his Youth Group. He helped raise $7,500 to convert a house into a church in Kapelna, a small Croatian village close to the Hungarian border.
Harris has said that his experiences and humble beginnings have given him discipline, dedication, and strong leadership skills in order to safeguard the country. His military career will help unite his desire to serve his country and maintain the world with a career in environmental geoscience, ensuring the world is a safe and beautiful place. He is grateful for the opportunity to make his dreams a reality.
"Mr. Harris is an exceptional young man with a bright future ahead of him. I am impressed by his determination to serve our country, and his proven leadership," said Rep. Wu. "Mr. Harris has shown that he is an intelligent and determined individual, and I am proud to nominate him for the TASSP scholarship."
