16th Annual MLK Blvd. Clean Up expands & honors Martin Luther King, Jr.
Austin, TX – Today, State Rep. Dawnna Dukes (Austin) held the 16th Annual MLK Day of Service to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Each year, this service project brings together hundreds of volunteers who dedicate time to beautifying the Austin street bearing King’s name.
"The MLK holiday is celebrated to remember and give tribute to Dr. King and his legacy,” said Dukes. “But it’s also an important opportunity to focus on community pride through community service. And that’s what we’re here to do today for Austin: to serve our community.”
United Way for Greater Austin (UWATX) supported the family-friendly event by recruiting more than 550 volunteers through its volunteer program, Hands On Central Texas. In addition to the MLK Blvd. clean up, which included 1.3 extra miles this year by extending to Chicon St., volunteers also participated in a couple of projects to assemble early childhood education kits and give a face-lift to a local community garden.
“Around this time each year we receive a large number of inquiries from individuals in our community about how to give back,” said UWATX President Debbie Bresette. “So we’re very fortunate to partner with Rep. Dukes on this project because it gives us the opportunity to build philanthropy in Greater Austin.”
Volunteers gathered at J.J. Seabrook Park at 9 a.m. for registration, supplies distribution and an official kickoff led by Rep. Dukes and UWATX President Debbie Bresette. After the kick-off, volunteers dispersed along MLK Blvd. to pick up trash and beautify the major street.
The following businesses and organizations helped to make this project possible: Keep Austin Beautiful, Austin Parks & Recreation, Fiesta Mart, Capital Metro, Coca Cola, H-E- B, Reddy Ice, Time Warner Cable and City of Austin Solid Waste Services.
