AUSTIN, TX – Newly-elected State Representative James Talarico, 29, has been appointed to the much sought-after Public Education Committee in the Texas House.

“We must fix our broken school finance system. We owe it to our property taxpayers, our teachers, and our kids. It’s an honor to join the bipartisan team that will meet this moment,” said Talarico. “As an educator, I’ll advocate for the students I taught in my classroom and every student just like them acros4s Texas.”

While always a high-profile committee, this session the Public Education Committee will take center stage as it attempts to overhaul the state’s school finance system. House Speaker Dennis Bonnen chose the freshman due to his extensive background in public education as a teacher and nonprofit leader. Rep. Talarico will be the only Central Texas legislator on the committee.

Rep. Talarico will also join the Juvenile Justice Committee where he’ll work to create more effective, fair, and just systems for all young people—particularly children of color.

Rep. Talarico graduated from Round Rock ISD schools before attending The University of Texas. As an undergrad, Talarico led students to advocate for accessible higher education. After graduation, he continued the fight for educational opportunity as a middle school teacher on the West Side of San Antonio: one of the state’s poorest neighborhoods. His experience in the classroom led him to earn a master’s degree in education policy from Harvard University before coming home to lead a local education nonprofit.

As an educator, Talarico made fixing the state’s broken school finance system the centerpiece of his campaign. He won his election in November 2018 replacing retiring State Rep. Larry Gonzales (Round Rock). Talarico attracted support from with his message of putting people over politics. Visit for more information.
