Expanding the Jurisdiction of Kaufman County Court at Law  print page

by: Rep. Bell, Keith

Senate Bill 891 passed the Senate and the House and will include expanding the jurisdiction of Kaufman County Court at Law No. 2.

(Austin, TX) Senate Bill 891 by Senator Joan Huffman now includes the same language as Representative Keith Bell's House Bill 2989, which expands the jurisdiction of Kaufman County Court at Law No. 2. Senate Bill 891 passed in the House and the Senate. The bill repeals a provision limiting the County Court at Law No. 2 of Kaufman County's jurisdiction. The bill requires a jury of 12 members before the statutory county court in civil cases where the disputed amount was at least $200,000, family law cases and proceedings, and felony cases. These changes only apply to a cause of action filed on or after the effective date.

Representative Keith Bell said the following regarding the bill: "There is no good reason to limit the jurisdiction of one of our county courts, limiting the productivity and efficiency of our Kaufman County court system." Representative Bell has heard input from local judges and county officials and has recognized the need to raise the jurisdiction of Kaufman County Court at Law No. 2.

"Kaufman County is growing, whether we like it or not. We can wait for growth to overload our already busy dockets or we can confront growth with proper planning. In this instance, proper planning means having both County Court's able to hear the same type of cases," stated Representative Bell.
