Mental Health Month and National Children's Mental Health Awareness Week  print page

by: Rep. White, James

(Austin, TX) - State Representative James White encourages Southeast Texas to take a proactive role in observing National Health Month and National Children's Mental Health Awareness Week (May 1-7).

This year's theme for Mental Health Month is "Life with Mental Illness" and calls on individuals to share what life with mental illness feels like for them in words, pictures, and video to be tagged on social media using the hashtag: #mentalillnessfeelslike. Those who observe the month are encouraged to speak up about their own experiences and point of view. Speaking out about mental health will break down the discrimination and stigma that currently surrounds mental illness.

The theme for this year's National Children's Awareness Week is "Healthy Families, Resilient Children: Mental Health is a Family Affair!" The awareness week aims to bring to light the importance of prevention and early identification of mental health challenges. In addition, it is important to highlight the fact that children are an integral part of a family unit and families must be strong as they nurture resiliency.

"It is important that we raise awareness and educate our communities on mental health issues and the resources that are at their disposal. As a member of the House Select Committee on Mental Health, I am working to address mental health needs for our veterans, within the criminal justice system, and for Texas children," said Rep. White.
