AUSTIN—Chief budget writers in the Texas House of Representatives announced their intention to honor the state’s commitment to fully fund the health care plan for Texas retired teachers for the upcoming two-year budget cycle.

The plan, known as TRS-Care, began in 1985 in order to provide competitive health benefits to Texas school employees and their dependents in retirement. Head budget writers in the House pledged to develop a thoughtful budget that bridges the plan’s estimated $768 million shortfall, due largely to rising medical and prescription drug costs and a growing number of retirees.

Rep. Gary VanDeaver, who serves on the education subcommittee of the budget-writing Appropriations committee, announced his support for the move.

“It is important for the State of Texas to keep the promise we have made to our current and retired teachers by protecting TRS-Care for the long-term. I am confident that we can do this while also delivering substantial tax relief to Texas families, and this budget commitment is an important first step,” said Rep. VanDeaver.

TRS-Care currently has more than 240,000 participants and receives funding from several sources, including the state, local school districts, and active and retired teachers.

Rep. VanDeaver is currently serving his first term in the House and is one of only three freshmen legislators appointed to serve on the Appropriations Committee. He represents House District 1, which includes Bowie, Franklin, Lamar, and Red River Counties.
