(Austin) The Speaker's Golf Tournament raised more than $590,000 for childhood immunizations today. The tournament is held annually to benefit the Caring for Children Foundation, and it honors Speaker Tom Craddick (R - Midland) and Nadine Craddick. Immunizations are given out through the foundation's Care Van Program.

"One in four Texas children go without immunizations," Speaker Craddick said. "The Care Van program fills the gap by visiting schools, churches, restaurants, parks, shopping centers and other places to bring immunizations directly to Texas kids. Nadine and I are proud to support this worthwhile effort."

Since its inception, more than 325,000 children have received immunization services through the Care Van Program. Because the foundation's administrative costs are covered by other sources, all donations to the charity go directly to childhood immunizations. In addition, this year two Houston-based Care Vans will provide tetanus shots for emergency responders for Hurricane Ike.

"This is a great boost for our efforts to expand childhood immunizations in Texas," said Craig Jeffery, the executive director for the Caring for the Children Foundation. "The support that Speaker Craddick and so many others have given to the Care Van Program means that more children will get the immunizations they need this year. That means better overall health for all Texans."

Childhood immunizations are on the rise in Texas. In fact, a new national survey shows that Texas childhood immunizations have recently hit a five-year high. In addition to aiding immunizations for children, the tournament also raised funds to benefit the Texas Food Bank Network, which is aiding victims in areas devastated by Hurricane Ike.
