This position is available in both the Texas Capitol office in Austin and the regional office in San Benito, Texas, depending on the organization’s operational needs.


  • Coordinate office budget, in consultation with the Rep. Bring any concerns about the budget (for example, if we're burning through it too fast or if we can afford something we previously thought we couldn't because we are not spending at the anticipated rate) to the Rep in a timely manner;
  • Ensure that the Rep's travel vouchers, per diem vouchers, and any other office expenses are submitted and are accurate;
  • Order supplies. Ensure that we have an adequate supply of office supplies for both the Capitol and district offices, business cards for the Rep and all staff, name plates, blue folders for member resolutions, etc., and that we have a sufficient supply of flags;
  • Read any or if possible, all source of media pertaining Cameron and Willacy county. Alert the Rep to any stories she'd be interested in or any events she should attend, and research any individual or group that we should honor with a letter or resolution;
  • Manages and coordinates staff/interns; prepares all personnel action forms and any other paper work required for administering the office's business.
  • Acts as the Member's liaison and responds to office visits and telephone inquiries from constituents and various interest groups;
  • Manage the Legislative Intern's correspondence and data entry duties into CMS and LMS;
  • Meet with the appropriate organizations and individuals regarding the bills for which she is responsible for from the Rep’s agenda, always keeping in mind of all House rules and state laws. Provide analysis, recommendations and 
  • Accompanies all constituents and other guests to floor when necessary;
  • Works a flexible schedule including long hours, nights and weekends; and
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Member.
  • Manages daily tasks for bills with LD, maintains records, serves as liaison for member and other offices.
  • Initiate meetings and develop relationships with stakeholders on various issues.
  • Draft communications, such as press releases, newsletters, social media posts, and constituent correspondence.
  • Ensure that mail from the House mailbox is timely received (which can be delegated) and that the Rep knows of any mail or email and HD 37 news that she should be made aware of.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Compensate based on experience. Experience preferred but not necessary, working in the Texas Legislature and/or conducting public policy research.
  • Ability to handle many time-sensitive projects and tasks at once.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Able to work long hours
  • Ability to analyze complex topics and summarize them succinctly.
