Chairman James White Stands in Support of the Little Sisters of the Poor
(Austin, TX) - State Representative James White joins the Texas Conservative Coalition (TCC) and the Office of the Attorney General in support of the Little Sisters of the Poor and their right to an exemption from mandatory contraceptive coverage.
On November 20, 2019, Rep. White signed on to the letter form the TCC thanking Attorney General Ken Paxton for filing a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the Little Sisters. Fifteen other states have joined in filing supportive amicus briefs since the mandate was implemented in President Obama's Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act back in 2010. Since then and through various years of litigation, President Trump's administration issued a formal rule in 2018 that protects and exempts those organizations who have sincerely held religious beliefs. Now in 2019, the Little Sisters are once again under attack due to an injunction from a federal district court.
"I thank General Paxton for ensuring that religious liberties are protected nationwide. The TCC letter truly highlights the need to support the Little Sisters and maintain the constitutional guidelines set forth by the First Amendment," said Rep. White. "When the Kountze High School cheerleaders in my district were told they could not hold banners with religious scriptures at football games, they fought back and won. I have always supported religious freedoms and will continue to do so while in the Texas Legislature."
