Representative Ray Lopez Accepting Applications for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program
SAN ANTONIO, TX - State Representative Ray Lopez is still accepting applications for the Texas Armed Services Program (TASSP); an academic scholarship that supports deserving students who demonstrate integrity and who wish to serve their country through military service.
“This is an incredible opportunity to help students pursue higher education and receive help covering the cost of rising tuition rates through military service,” stated Rep. Lopez. “The TASSP was created to embolden the next generation of Texas leaders to achieve their goals through the rewarding experience of military service. I am happy to be a part of this process by nominating an outstanding young leader from our community, who will thrive as both a member of the academic and military societies.”
The Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program was devised to lessen the financial burden of tuition for post-secondary students by encouraging them to become members of the Texas Army National Guard or Air National Guard, the United States Merchant Marines, or to become commissioned officers in any branch of the armed services of the United States. Every year, the Governor and Lt. Governor can appoint up to two students from throughout Texas, and each Senator and Representative may appoint one from their respective districts.
Thanks to the 86th Legislature and increased funding from House Bill 1, the TASSP can now provide recipients with a conditional scholarship of $10,000 for up to four years, depending on available state funding. To be eligible, the student must fulfill two of the following four requirements:
1. On track to graduate or has graduated high school with the Distinguished Level of Achievement Plan or the International Baccalaureate Program (IB);
2. Has a current high school GPA of 3.0 or higher or graduated with a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale;
3. Is currently ranked in the top third of their prospective high school graduating class or graduated in the top third of their graduating class;
4. Has achieved a college readiness score on the SAT (1070) or ACT (23).
Students must be enrolled in a college or university in the Fall 2019/Spring 2020 academic year in order to be nominated for the TASSP during the current nomination cycle. Upon meeting the requirements, all interested candidates must apply by the deadline of July 31, 2019 in order to be considered for a nomination.
