FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 01/23/2019

Rep. Ortega Named to Transportation, Public Health, and House Administration Committees for the 86th Legislature

AUSTIN – Today, House Speaker Dennis Bonnen released his committee appointments for the 86th Legislative Session. Representative Lina Ortega was appointed to three committees: Public Health, Transportation, and House Administration.

“The El Paso region has tremendous public health and transportation needs, and I am grateful for the opportunity to work on improving health outcomes and mobility throughout the State of Texas, and specifically El Paso.” Rep. Ortega said.

The Public Health Committee will focus on the protection of public health, mental health prevention, and treatment, oversight of the Health and Human Services Commission, as well as state health boards and agencies. The Transportation Committee will cover commercial motor vehicles, the Texas highway system, railroads, airports, water transportation, rivers and harbors, the Texas Department of Transportation, the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, and the Texas Transportation Commission. House Administration is a procedural committee that oversees the operation of the House and its employees.

Committees will begin meeting regularly in the coming weeks. The committee process is the first opportunity for bills to be vetted during the legislative process. A bill must be voted favorably out of committee in order for it to be debated on the House floor.
