State Representative Philip Cortez Accepting Applications for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program
SAN ANTONIO - Texas State Representative Philip Cortez is officially considering applicants for the Texas Armed Services Scholarship Program (TASSP). This scholarship provides financial assistance for soon-to-be college students interested in serving their country as they pursue higher education.
Representative Cortez issued the following statement:
"As your state representative and a member of the armed services, it is my honor to be in a position to provide this amazing opportunity to a deserving student from House District 117. The TASSP is a wonderful scholarship program for our young aspiring military service men and women. I look forward to reviewing your applications because I know the kind of young talent produced right here in Military City, U.S.A."
To be eligible for this scholarship, the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board requests students meet two of the following four requirements:
• Be on track to graduate or have graduated high school with the Distinguished Level of Achievement Plan or the International Baccalaureate Program
• Have a high school GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Achieved a college readiness score on the SAT (1070) or ACT (23)
• Ranked in the top one-third of the prospective high school graduating class
Further, students must enroll in a Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) or another undergraduate officer commissioning program while enrolled in the institution. After graduation, students must enter into a four year commitment to be a member of the Texas Army National Guard, Texas Air National Guard, Texas State Guard, United States Coast Guard, or United States Merchant Marine; or contract to serve as a commissioned officer in any branch of the armed services of the United States.
