Chairman James White Urges Congress and HHSC to Support CHIP Funding

(Austin, TX) – State Representative James White has written to Health & Human Services Commission (HHSC) Executive Director Charles Smith regarding the need to continue funding the CHIP program.

Letters were also sent out to Senator John Cornyn, Senator Ted Cruz, and Congressman Brian Babin urging them also lend their support to the CHIP program. Rep. White stressed urgency and noted that many families who rely on CHIP were being sent to the ACA federal marketplace to find coverage. An alternative that Rep. White noted is not a viable option. The marketplace has been imploding and sending families to seek coverage here could leave many vulnerable Texas children without health care.

“Especially now with so many Texans recovering in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, I am extremely supportive of efforts to fund CHIP and prevent the uncertainty of health care coverage for Texas children. The prospect of thousands of solidly middle class Texas families losing their CHIP coverage just days before Christmas is unnecessary,” said Rep. White.
