ASHBY APPOINTED TO BUDGET CONFERENCE COMMITTEE
AUSTIN – State Representative Trent Ashby (Lufkin) has been appointed by House Speaker Joe Straus (San Antonio) to serve on the Conference Committee for Senate Bill 1, which represents the state's biennial budget.
Prior to his appointment, Ashby has been deeply involved in crafting the House budget as the Chairman for the Article III Subcommittee, which has purview over public and higher education funding in Texas. As Chairman, Ashby and his committee helped secure nearly $2 billion in additional funding for the public education system and an additional $500 million for the continuation of healthcare for retired teachers.
"I look forward to working through the differences between the proposed House and Senate budgets," said Ashby, who will be serving on the esteemed conference committee for the second time in as many sessions. "I have no doubt that my colleagues and I will ultimately be able to produce a responsible and prudent state budget that reflects the priorities of the 27 million plus people blessed to call Texas Home."
The Budget Conference Committee is comprised of ten members, five from the Texas House of Representatives and five from the Texas Senate. In addition to Ashby, House Budget Conferees include: House Appropriations Chairman John Zerwas (Richmond), Representative Sarah Davis (West University), Representative Larry Gonzales (Round Rock), and Representative Oscar Longoria (La Joya). Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick has appointed the following five members to represent the Texas Senate: Senate Finance Chairwoman Jane Nelson (Flower Mound), Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa (McAllen), Senator Joan Huffman (Houston, Senator Lois Kolkhorst (Brenham), and Senator Charles Schwertner (Georgetown).
