Gutierrez Named to Chair Veterans' Committee
AUSTIN- Today, Texas House Speaker Joe Straus announced committee assignments for the 85th Legislative Session. Representative Roland Gutierrez (District 119) was duly appointed to serve as Chair, House Committee on Defense and Veterans' Affairs and also appointed to serve on the House Committee on Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence.
As Chairman of the Defense and Veteran's Affairs, Representative Gutierrez will be tasked with guiding legislation that effectively delivers benefits to veterans. The committee will advance legislation with the guidance and advice from the nearly two dozen state veteran agencies and entities and over a dozen service and advocacy organizations such as Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and the Military order of the Purple Heart.
"I am humbled and honored to serve the more than 1.7 million veterans and their families who call Texas home. This new role is especially important for my district and my home of San Antonio which we proudly call Military City. In San Antonio alone, veterans contribute over $2 billion annually to our local economy and are an integral part of our community. Our veterans and their families have sacrificed a great deal on behalf of our nation and I look forward to working with my colleagues to ensure that the committee advances quality legislation that adequately represents their sacrifice and provides the care and services they need."
Representative Gutierrez's second appointment is to serve on the House Committee on Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence. The Judiciary and Civil Jurisprudence committee's jurisdiction over all matters concerning civil laws, civil procedure, and oversight for the State Commission on Judicial Conduct.
