Announcing the Mary E. González Transitional Center for LGBT Youth
AUSTIN -- This weekend, Representative Mary E. González formally accepted the great honor of lending her name to an LGBT Transitional Center set to open this fall to serve youth in El Paso County.
Co-founders Victoria Rodriguez and Sunny Ybarra first recognized the need for such a center when they met a young LGBT teenager in El Paso, who lost access to his social safety net due to his identity, and ended up in an unsafe living situation. Despite the social services available in El Paso County, Rodriguez and Ybarra realized that many LGBT youth in El Paso also needed a secure place to stay.
From the mission statement for the Mary E. González Transitional Center for LGBT Youth:
The Mary E. Gonzalez Transitional Center’s mission is to create a sanctuary for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning youth experiencing homelessness or at risk of neglect and abuse due to their gender or sexual identification.
"I could not be more honored and proud to be associated with this center for LGBT youth in our community," Rep. González said, "I am inspired by the co-founders' vision: 'Striving for a world that transcends the divisions of gender and sexual identification.' This service will be invaluable to some of our community's most vulnerable young people."
The Mary E. González Transitional Center for LGBT Youth is expected to become operational this fall.
