REP. MUÑOZ PROMOTES NATIONAL ARSON AWARENESS WEEK
VEHICLE ARSON- A COMBUSTIBLE CRIME
MISSION TEXAS - Representative Sergio Muñoz, Jr. alongside the Texas State Fire Marshal's office, the Texas Department of Insurance, and local fire agencies, are joining the U.S. Fire Administration for Arson Awareness Week during the week of May 4-10, 2014. The theme this year is Vehicle Arson- a Combustible Crime.
During the past 10 years, over 48,000 intentional vehicle fires have been reported along with an estimated 72 deaths and $345 million dollars in property loss, according to the U.S. Fire Administration and National Fire Protection Association.
"Every bit of awareness we can raise is a top priority to ensure the safety of everyone in our community; it is a matter of saving lives and money," said Representative Muñoz.
In Texas, approximately five percent of all vehicle fires are intentionally set, accounting for $3.5 million in vehicle fire losses. “While it may seem obvious to most people, it bears repeating that setting a vehicle on fire for profit is insurance fraud,” said Insurance Commissioner Julia Rathgeber. “Intentionally set vehicle fires contribute to insurance losses and ultimately lead to higher auto rates for everyone.”
