REP. LUCIO LAYS OUT HB 281 IN CRIMINAL JURISPRUDENCE COMMITTEE
In December, State Representative Eddie Lucio III filed HB 281, a bill which would allow an immediate family member of a peace officer who died as the result of alleged criminal activity to make an oral statement regarding the terms of any plea bargain agreement in the resulting court case.
"Granting an immediate family member of a deceased peace officer the right to make an oral statement is not only the right thing to do, but it also aids the judge to make a fair decision," said Rep. Lucio. "This bill has received support from the Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas (CLEAT) and I look forward to fight for this bill's passage."
Today, the Criminal Jurisprudence Committee heard testimony on this bill.
"It is imperative that we convince other lawmakers about the importance of this bill," said Rep. Lucio. "I want to make sure that the families of every peace officer know that their opinion counts when a plea bargain is being discussed."
