House Representative

Murphy, Jim

AUSTIN -- Today Representative Jim Murphy (Houston) announced that the House Interim Committee on Manufacturing will be holding hearings in Dallas, San Antonio, and Houston over a three day period from Monday, November 12 to Wednesday, November 14th.

The Committee will meet at 9:00 AM Monday in the Ernst & Young Gallery on the SMU campus, followed by a Tuesday, 11:00 AM at the Port of San Antonio, 907 Billy Mitchell Boulevard, San Antonio, TX. The committee will meet at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Greater Houston Partnership, 1200 Smith Street, Houston, TX.

Last month, Speaker Joe Straus appointed Representative Murphy to Chair the Interim Committee on Manufacturing. The committee has been tasked with compiling and summarizing findings by standing House committees, then making recommendations on how to encourage manufacturing in the state. The Committee will also determine how those recommendations interplay with other committees' work on business growth and retention in Texas.

The Speaker's office and the Committee felt the best way to involve members of the community and the manufacturing industry was to hold hearings around the state.

"I am honored to chair this Committee,” Rep. Murphy said. “Manufacturing is a vital sector of our Texas economy and spurs the highest level of economic activity. Our recommendations will provide an important foundation as the House works to encourage the creation of more manufacturing jobs for Texans.”

The Committee will report its findings and recommendations, including drafts of legislation necessary to implement the recommendations, to Speaker Straus by Jan. 7, 2013. The Committee will expire at the start of the 83rd Legislature.

Representative Murphy represents House District 133 in western Harris County. He currently serves on the Economic and Small Business Development and Ways and Means committees and the Partnership Advisory Commission.
