Speaker Craddick surveys damage from Hurricane Ike
Austin) - Speaker Tom Craddick (Midland) today visited Gulf Coast cities ravaged by Hurricane Ike. The speaker was joined by Rep. Warren Chisum (Pampa), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, to survey the damage and get preliminary estimates on the cost of the destruction.
"The devastation we saw today was staggering," Speaker Craddick said. "Hurricane Ike shattered homes and communities. Although we will begin next session with a substantial surplus, the tragic aftermath of Hurricane Ike will make many demands on our resources. Our goal today was to get a better understanding of what that could mean for the state, and to see if there are ways we can improve the relief efforts on the Gulf Coast."
This morning, the speaker and Chairman Chisum attended a roundtable discussion in Angleton, where Rep. Dennis Bonnen (Angleton) and other local officials updated them on area needs. They took a helicopter tour of Galveston and Kemah with Reps. Craig Eiland (Galveston) and Larry Taylor (Friendswood), toured Nassau Bay and Seabrook with Rep. John Davis (Houston), and visited Beaumont and Bridge City with Reps. Joe Deshotel (Beaumont) and Mike Hamilton (Mauriceville).
