Speaker Craddick encourages Capitol community to contribute to Hurricane Ike relief efforts

Austin) - Speaker Tom Craddick (Midland) is asking legislators and Capitol employees to help with recovery assistance for persons affected by Hurricane Ike. The efforts begin today with a food drive for the Capital Area Food Bank.

Craddick is specifically asking House members and staff to donate food and financial support to aid those in need in the Gulf Coast area and to volunteer time at the Capitol Area Food Bank. Legislative agencies, the Governor's office and private sector representatives who are a part of the Capitol community have been invited to join the effort.

"It is important that we, as Texans, pull together to help those in need," Speaker Craddick said. "Hurricane Ike shattered homes and communities, but it couldn't break the giving spirit of Texans. That same spirit astonished the country with the generous outpouring to our neighbors in Louisiana three years ago. Now that it is our own fellow Texans in need, I have no doubt that the people of this state will once again respond. That's just what Texans do."

A House of Representatives truck will be located on the north Capitol Drive, today, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., to accept donations for the Capital Area Food Bank. This organization desperately needs food and products to distribute to evacuees in the Austin area who cannot go home and may not have the financial ability to purchase food and other essential commodities. Items most needed at this time include: pop-top canned meats, peanut butter, granola bars, bottled water, diapers, wipes and personal care items, such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shampoo and conditioner.

The Texas House of Representatives will also be providing 35 volunteers to assist at the Capitol Area Food Bank, today, from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. The food bank is located at 8201 S. Congress Avenue.

Donations by cash or check made payable to the "Texas Food Bank Network" will be will be accepted by Julia Stribling in the Speaker's Office (Room 2W.13) through Friday, September 26. Funds donated will be distributed by the Network to food banks through the storm-damaged areas of South and East Texas.
