Rep. Ryan Guillen hosts Starr County Day as over 100 local residents visit Capitol

Austin -- Over one hundred Starr County residents and students attended Starr County Day at the state capitol last week where county leaders were introduced in the Texas Senate and the House of Representatives.

"It was terrific to see so many Starr County citizens present to celebrate their day at the Capitol," said Guillen.

The day which began with resolutions in the Texas Senate and House of Representatives proclaiming March 13, 2003 as Starr County Day, proceeded with an outdoor musical and dance performance by Ringgold Middle School Mariachi and Folklorico and concluded with a Starr County Barbeque Picnic on the Capitol Grounds for legislators and staff that numbered over 600.

Representative Ryan Guillen said he was impressed by the effort from his home county, "It was great to have Starr County people here at the capitol. They made a good impression on many of the officials and staff members they met and talked with while they were here," he said.

Guillen noted that the Starr County group filled a large portion of the gallery in both the Senate and the House.

"It is important that we make an impression, like we did with Starr County Day, to remind legislators they are working for the entire state of Texas and not just their own areas," Rep. Guillen explained. He said that legislators dealing with budget limitations and funding cuts need to be reminded about the people their decisions will affect.

"When Starr County officials and residents come back in the future to testify in committees about programs in our district, the legislators will remember our showing and interest in our stateís government," he added.

Students who attended were also given a tour of the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum which offers the Story of Texas with three floors of exhibits, a Texas Spirit Theater and Austinís only IMAX Theatre.
