Austin, TX - For most school districts across the Rio Grande Valley, Monday, Aug. 28 marks the start of the 2017-2018 school year. While students are excited to return to their studies and friends, the community must ensure they are doing their part to protect our kids, especially those that take the bus.

When driving near school buses, people must pay attention to the buses' flashing lights. If they are flashing red, that means traffic in all directions must stop. A good rule of thumb is once the bus stops, we all stop.

Student safety should always be a primary concern for drivers commuting near school zones or around bus pick-up and drop-off areas; drivers should always slow down, drive with extreme caution, and watch for students crossing the street in these places.

It must also be noted that any cell phone usage in school zones is strictly prohibited and fines are often increased in these areas for any offenders.
