Representative Jeff Leach Issues Statement on STAAR Testing Waiver  print page

by: Rep. Leach, Jeff

ALLEN – Today, following Governor Abbott's announcement that he is waiving the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) testing requirements for the 2019-2020 school year, Representative Jeff Leach issued the following statement:

"Today's announcement from Governor Abbott reveals our state's commitment to prioritizing the health and safety of all Texans - namely our school children and teachers - as we continue to respond to the pandemic of COVID-19. In a time such as this, standardized testing should be the last thing on the minds of our educators, students and their families.

“As I have said from the beginning, I fully trust the leadership of Plano ISD and Allen ISD, in consultation with educators and parents, to ensure that we are effectively serving and meeting the educational needs of students and to achieve a successful completion of this historically challenging academic year. As our state continues to respond to the pandemic of COVID-19, I want to thank Governor Abbott for actively inviting and listening to the input of all Texans and for acting swiftly on this important decision. I am grateful for our Governor’s steady hand and bold leadership during this challenging time for the Lone Star State."

Last week, Representative Leach, along with various legislators across the state, called on Governor Abbott to use his authority to suspend STAAR testing requirements for the 2019-2020 academic year in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The letter from Representative Leach is attached.

Since 2013, Representative Leach has served the people of House District 67, which encompasses portions of Plano, Allen, Richardson and Dallas in Collin County. Leach is the Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence and he serves on the House Committee on Pensions, Investments & Financial Services and the House Committee on Redistricting.
