REP. DREW SPRINGER CALLS ON HOUSE COMMITTEES TO INVESTIGATE OUTRAGEOUS OFFICE LEASE OF TRS  print page

Austin, TX-- State Representative Drew Springer of House District 68 delivered a letter today to Rep. Jim Murphy, Chairman of the House Pensions, Investments & Financial Services Committee, which has legislative oversight of the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, and to Rep. Giovanni Capriglione, Chairman of the powerful House Appropriations Committee that oversees the budget and spending of the State. The letter takes issue with Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) spending at least $326,000 a month in rent for office space on Austinís Sixth Street, all while continuing to raise costs on current and retired teachers.

The letter claims that "TRS is in breach of its constitutional requirement to manage assets held in the trust by any principles of commonsense." The letter goes on to ask that Chairman Murphy and Chairman Capriglione hold oversight hearings into the motives of TRS leadership and seek any possible remedies to the miss-use of funds, such as subleasing the TRS office space at Indeed Tower and finding TRS more reasonable accommodations.

When asked to comment, Rep. Springer said, "I was outraged upon hearing about the lease agreement, and when I discuss the issue with retired teachers in HD68 they tell me they are also outraged, which is why I am calling for legislative hearings. We have teachers going without, living month to month on their retirement checks. Yet, TRS thinks the most prudent use of their money is to go out and rent one of the most sought-after locations for companies seeking extravagant downtown accommodations close to the city's bar district. Our teachers deserve better."
