by: Rep. Morrison, Geanie W.

VICTORIA, Texas State Representative Geanie W. Morrison will travel to El Paso this week to participate in a public hearing of the House Select Committee on Mass Violence Prevention and Community Safety. The House Select Committee was formed in response to the tragedies in El Paso, Midland, and Odessa, and is tasked with studying and recommending effective legislative solutions and other measures to help prevent mass violence and improve community safety in Texas. The hearing will be held on Thursday, January 9th at 9:00 AM at the University of Texas at El Paso.

House members will hear invited and public testimony from individuals and families directly impacted by the mass violence that occurred in El Paso on August 3, 2019. While in El Paso for the hearing, Rep. Morrison will also visit the Walmart memorial with her colleagues as they hear from local officials on community safety and the mass violence from August 3rd.

"With the recent tragedy in White Settlement, Texas, we are reminded about the importance of the work before our committee to make Texans safer, while protecting the rights of all Texans to defend themselves," said Rep. Morrison. "Hearing from the citizens of El Paso this week who persevered through their own mass violence will help us find solutions. I am committed to working with them and my colleagues to make Texans safer, while protecting the rights of law-abiding citizens."
