TCA Poetry Out Loud Recitation Competition Opportunity for Texas Students  print page

by: Rep. White, James

(Austin, TX) - The Texas Commission on the Arts (TCA) conducts the state Poetry Out Loud recitation competition. Produced on a national scale by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, the program provides scholarships to high school students and cash to purchase poetry books to winners’ school libraries.

This program provides schools with lesson plans, resources, and the opportunity to work with poets from across the state. Students who participate in the competition will memorize and recite poems from the anthology compiled by the program. Ultimately, schools will send students to compete at the statewide competition in February 2020. The statewide winner receives $200, while his or her school library garners $500. The state’s second place winner receives $100, and his or her school library, $250.

The statewide winner represents Texas at the national competition in Washington, DC in late April 2020. The winner of that competition receives a $20,000 scholarship.

"I highly encourage our educators who teach English Language Arts in our school districts to consider having their students participate in this competition. The educational value and opportunity to work with local poets is truly a must for our students," said State Representative White. "I look forward to seeing our Southeast Texas youth give it their all and potentially representing our community in Washington DC."
