SB 1679 Helps Ensure Children Retain Pre-K Eligibility

(AUSTIN, TX) – On Friday the Texas House of Representatives passed Senate Bill 1679, authored by Sen. Royce West and sponsored by Rep. John Turner of Dallas. The bill ensures that a child enrolled in three-year-old prekindergarten remains eligible for prekindergarten the following school year, without the need to resubmit the same paperwork.

Following passage of the bill, Representative Turner released the following statement:

“The positive effects of continuous prekindergarten education are well established. Senate Bill 1679 will help children continue to access pre-K during crucial early developmental years. It will also reduce the administrative burden on school districts, which will no longer have to repeat a cumbersome re-verification process for thousands of pre-K students. I’m grateful to Senator West for authoring this bill in the Senate and to my colleagues in the House for their bipartisan support.”

Currently, parents have to prove the eligibility of a child for three-year-old prekindergarten and then re-prove their child’s eligibility for prekindergarten the following year. By eliminating this unnecessary requirement, the bill will significantly reduce paperwork and inefficient staff time for school districts with large pre-K programs, such as Dallas I.S.D. It will also make pre-K enrollment more closely match the enrollment process at all other grade levels.

Senate Bill 1679 was identical to House Bill 2030, authored by Representative Turner in the House. The bill will now head to Governor Abbott’s desk.
