El Paso Stands Strong in Fighting for Priorities in State’s $250 Billion Budget  print page

by: Rep. González, Mary

AUSTIN - Earlier today, the Texas House and Senate approved HB 1 and SB 500, the 86th Legislature’s budgetary bills for the upcoming biennium. Besides providing funding for special education supports, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, and other crucial programs, the bills include items that will be transformative for the El Paso community.

This bill helps El Paso specifically by providing $6.5 million for the pharmacy school at the University of Texas at El Paso, $20 million for Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso’s Woody L. Hunt School of Dental Medicine, an additional $620k in formula funding for El Paso Community College, $5 million for Wyler Aerial Tramway repairs, and funding for the ongoing Rio Grande Compact litigation so our farmers get their fair share of water.

“One of the most important things we do as a body is choose how to fund our state’s agencies and programs,” said Rep. González. “I am so proud to have served on the Appropriations Committee, and on the conference committee for SB 500 - I truly believe we have produced legislation that will make Texas a better place.”

More generally, HB 1 gives $3 million to the surplus agricultural grant program to provide surplus agricultural products to food banks and other charitable organizations that serve low-income individuals, and increases formula funding for many institutions of higher education. SB 500 includes about $220 million to help Texas pay a financial penalty to the federal government for illegally decreasing funding for students with disabilities and avoid a future penalty, makes the Teacher Retirement System actuarially sound, and gives our retired teachers a 13th check averaging $2,000.
