AUSTIN – In the final days of the 86th Legislative Session, State Representative Jessica González successfully passed components of her sweeping legislative agenda. On Wednesday, May 22, the House passed Senate Bill 20, which Rep. González amended to dedicate more resources to victims of sex trafficking, while cracking down on buyers who drive demand.

“The Commercial Sex Exploitation Victims Fund will provide much-needed services to survivors of the sex trade and is funded by increased court costs on those who purchase and compel prostitution," said Rep. González. "It is critical that we prevent victims from being caught in a cycle of incarceration, and I hope my amendment will bring us closer to achieving true justice for victims by getting them help -- not jail time."

Her amendment builds on earlier successes this session, including appropriating more state funds toward prostitution prevention programs and ensuring exploited victims are not charged with crimes they were coerced into committing by pimps and traffickers.

On Tuesday, May 21, Senate Bill 1414 passed the House with an amendment by Rep. González that strengthens protections for renters burdened with exorbitant late fees.

"My work on affordable housing this session has always been focused on lowering property taxes and reducing rents for working families." Rep. González continued, "I will never stop fighting for the people of District 104, and I am proud to have passed legislation to protect renters from crooked landlords before the clock ran out on the 86th Legislative Session.”
