BILL HEADS TO GOVERNOR ABBOTT FOR SIGNATURE

AUSTIN, TX—Yesterday, the Texas House of Representatives passed S.B 479 by Senator Watson, companion bill to H.B. 2573 by Representative Longoria. This legislation updates several statutes to include our two most recently opened medical schools, the University of Texas at Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine and Dell Medical School at University of Texas at Austin and allows both institutions to participate in the Joint Admission Medical Program.

In 2011, the legislature created JAMP to assist highly motivated, economically disadvantaged students in preparing for and succeeding in medical school. The JAMP program currently operates through a partnership between 9 Texas medical schools and 68 public and private 4-year undergraduate institutions. JAMP works like a pipeline, providing undergraduates that are accepted into the program with scholarships, summer medical internships, MCAT preparation, and travel assistance for interviews. If they continue to meet the program requirements, they are guaranteed admission to one of the participating medical schools.

Representative Longoria issued the following statement:

"I will always be an advocate in bringing forward these types of opportunities for students attending the UTRGV-School of Medicine; JAMP is a huge step in allowing these students to prosper in furthering their education."

Dr. Guy Bailey, President of UTRGV, issued the following statement:

"JAMP has an excellent reputation for helping hundreds of talented, highly motivated and economically disadvantaged students achieve their dreams of becoming physicians. We are extremely grateful to Rep. Longoria and Sen. Watson for passing legislation to allow UTRGV’s School of Medicine to participate in the JAMP program so that we can continue to grow our own medical doctors in the Rio Grande Valley.”

This legislation expands this impactful program, and will benefit the Rio Grande Valley greatly and serve as an apparatus to the University of Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine in continuing their growth.
