AUSTIN –Following today's House passage of Senate Bill 2, Rep. Lina Ortega released the following statement:

"While I appreciate the work of Chairman Burrows and the members of the House Ways and Means Committee, I am opposed to Senate Bill 2. I am supportive of providing property tax relief to Texans but this bill does not do that. Instead, after years of shifting the cost burden for basic services like transportation infrastructure to local governments, Senate Bill 2 makes it more difficult and costly for cities and counties to provide these services.

I voted in support of House Bill 3, the school finance reform bill, which would decrease property taxes for homeowners by increasing the state share of education funding. House Bill 3 provides real property relief.

Senate Bill 2 is expected to be finalized in a conference committee between the House and the Senate.
