Holocaust Remembrance Week in Public Schools has Passed the House.  print page

by: Rep. Raymond, Richard Peña

Yesterday, the Texas House of Representatives passed HB 3966, State Representative Richard Peña Raymond’s (District 42) legislation that directs all Texas public schools to acknowledge and educate all students on the atrocities of the Holocaust which primarily took place in Europe during World War II.

"As has been said before, those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it and as time passes, it can become easy to forget, never learn, or even pretend that something never happened. We must never let this happen, in honor of the millions of Jewish people who lost their lives during the Holocaust. We must never let this happen in order for us to be able to write strong policies for our nation that understand the importance of diversity, raise inclusive generations to come and to never repeat that past.

"This bill will help to ensure that students learn age appropriate facts relating to how intolerance of diversity can lead to devastating results. It will help to continue to educate our future generations on the significance of inclusion and will celebrate the contributions that all people bring to our communities.”

“I am proud of my colleagues for embracing the importance of this measure and for passing this into law.”

This law will take effect for the 2019-2020 school year. The Governor shall designate a week to be known as “Holocaust Remembrance Week in Public Schools”.
