First Bill Since His Election on January 29, 2019 - House District 79

AUSTIN, Texas -- Today, Representative Art Fierro passed his first piece of legislation of the 86th Legislative Session through the Texas House. House Bill 2900 allows (not requires) a commodity producers board to hold an open or closed meeting by telephone conference call. Because Texas is such a vast state it is often difficult for those in agriculture to give up a whole day of work and expend resources to travel to one location, only to hold a board meeting in person.

The bill subjects the teleconference meeting to the same requirements applicable to other meetings under the Texas Open Meetings Act, therefore it creates more opportunity for transparency while saving farmers and ranchers time and money.

Representative Fierro said, "With the help of the chairman of the Agriculture and Livestock Committee, a committee on which I serve -- today we passed an important bill that frees up resources for everyone who works to ensure Texans have safe, abundant and affordable choices of food and other agriculture products."

The legislation now moves to the Senate where its companion is pending the arrival of the House bill before moving it to the governor's desk.
