Landgraf Bill to Authorize Renovation of UTPB's Mesa Building Moves Forward  print page

by: Rep. Landgraf, Brooks

AUSTIN On Thursday, the Texas House Higher Education Committee passed House Bill 2000 - legislation co-authored by State Representative Brooks Landgraf (Odessa) - which will assist the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (UTPB) in financing the improvement of the Mesa Building.

"I'm proud to co-author this legislation which will allow UTPB to make much needed improvements to the Mesa Building and continue to be one of West Texas' premier institutions of higher education for generations to come," Landgraf said.

H.B. 2000 authorizes $40 million in campus construction funds for the improvement and renovation of the Mesa Building. Known as the main building on campus, the Mesa Building was built in the 1970's and is the primary academic building housing the colleges of business, nursing, education, and some of the arts and sciences. It is also home to the academic and career services office and administration offices. Proposed improvements include updated technology, improved space utilization, and improved maintenance, such as elevators, bathrooms, HVAC, roof, and lighting.

H.B. 2000 will now go to the full House for a vote before moving to the Senate and must be signed into law by Governor Greg Abbott to become effective.

The 86th Texas legislative session is underway and will run through May 27, 2019.
