Representative Mary Ann Perez Issues Update on the Aftermath of the ITC Fire  print page

by: Rep. Perez, Mary Ann
03/21/2019

Deer Park, TX The fire at the Intercontinental Terminals Company (ITC) in Deer Park was extinguished as of Wednesday morning. Crews and workers continue to spray the tanks with foam to prevent any material from reigniting and suppress the vapors. The air quality is being aggressively monitored. As the wind shifts, so do the monitors. A shelter-in-place was issued this morning for the City of Deer Park due to elevated levels of benzene in the air but has since been lifted. It is believed that the foam dissipated on one of the tanks, which allowed the vapors to escape. That area has since been re-foamed and crews are working to contain the vapors. The risk is localized, but make sure to continue to monitor the media for updates. According to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), exposure levels are currently minimal. If you are worried about any symptoms, call your doctor or the "Ask a Nurse" hotline at 713-634-1110. The hotline is active from 8:00 AM to 8:30 PM and will provide information regarding health concerns as a result of this incident.

The water quality is also being analyzed at various points with no results. Water sampling results will be made public once available.

Representative Perez issued the following statement:

"Currently, it is all hands on deck in Deer Park. The health, safety and protection of the community is top priority. While it is a big relief that the fire was extinguished, people should continue to remain cautious and informed regarding the air quality. The response is ongoing and all of the agencies remain fully engaged in keeping the community safe. Please continue to keep an eye out for news updates."
