by: Rep. Perez, Mary Ann

Deer Park, TX - On Sunday, March 17, a fire started in two tanks at the Intercontinental Terminals Company (ITC) in Deer Park, Texas, located within House District 144. As of early this morning, it was reported that the fire had spread to several adjacent tanks.

At 10:00 a.m. today, ITC officials indicated in a press conference that there are a total of 7 tanks on fire containing components of gasoline. Officials indicated they are controlling the fire in a coordinated effort, however, it will have to burn out, over approximately two more days. It was also mentioned that the possibility of explosion is minimal, and nearby cities have been given updated air quality testing results. Harris County Fire Marshall Laurie Christensen stated that the cause of the fire is still under investigation and her organization is continuing to post important updates on social media.

The shelter-in-place for the City of Deer Park has been lifted, however Deer Park ISD and La Porte ISD will remain closed today, as will extracurricular activities in both districts. Highway 225 is completely open, however portions of Independence Parkway remain closed near the facility.

Contact the ITC's Public Information Officer Support Team at 281-884-0220 for additional information.

"Since midday Sunday, I have been working with local city officials and ITC personnel in order to remain as updated as possible on this serious situation," said Perez. "My office is also receiving updates as they become available from the Texas Environmental Quality Commission, ITC and the City of Deer Park. I will continue to closely monitor the situation and provide updates as the situation changes."
