AUSTIN, TEXAS, March 12th, 2019– Representative Mayes Middleton filed legislation that stops legislators from immediately becoming lobbyists after they leave office and requires a two-session “cooling-off” period before former legislators are legally able to lobby in Austin.
Middleton said in a statement: “Serving in the Legislature should be an act of public service, not a pipeline to getting a job as an Austin lobbyist.” Representative Middleton filed House Bill 3972 instituting the lobbying moratorium for former legislators.

Representative Middleton continued, “Members of the legislature are elected by their voters to represent them, and then to return home again. The legislator-to-lobbyist pipeline undermines this and certainly does not withstand a smell test. Passing the cooling-off period will help restore the public service our founders intended.”

Mayes Middleton, along with his wife, Macy, and three sons, Connor, Christian, and Matthew, live in Wallisville, Texas. Mayes is a 7th generation Chambers County resident and Texan. Mayes is President of Middleton Oil Company, an independent oil and gas company that operates wells in South Texas and along the Gulf Coast, and is engaged in joint exploration ventures. In addition to his work in the oil and gas industry, Mayes also runs his ranching, cattle, and farming operations. He and his wife support numerous local community organizations and faith-based charities.
