AUSTIN, February 15, 2019 - State Representative Sheryl Cole has filed HB 1821, an act that would designate the portion of State Loop 111, otherwise known as Airport Blvd., between I-35 and US-183 as the Richard Overton Memorial Highway.
Cole had the following to say: "I was saddened at the passing of Richard Overton who, at the age of 112, was the nation's oldest living veteran, and a long, long time resident of East Austin. Our community is proud to have known Mr. Overton for such a great length of time, where he could always be found on his porch ready to talk with anyone on their way through. It was heartening to see the outpouring of love to celebrate this man's life, and I am proud to do what I can to honor this local legend."
Cole has also filed a resolution, HR 133, honoring Overton. The full text of that resolution is available online here.
Does this change or remove the name of Airport Blvd?
No, this designation would be in addition to the current name. No addresses would be affected.
Why Memorial Highway and not Boulevard?
Memorial highways are simply the name of the mechanism available with TXDOT for honoring people this way, it doesn't change any zoning or traffic patterns.
